He Bought a Groove Fairlead and Won a 1973 Scout II

Dave spent a chunk of his career in towing and recovery. He’s a car guy on top of that, with a couple of old Chevys and a GMC sitting in various stages of being put back together. So when he picked up some Yankum SWAG, a Groove Fairlead, and some winch line from us, he knew exactly what he was buying. What he didn’t know was that the order had also put him in the running for Giveaway #3.

The first phone call didn’t quite land. Dave was skeptical. His wife and son were skeptical. Felt too good to be true, which is fair. A couple more conversations with Jade and reality started to settle in. Dave E. of Palisade, Colorado had won a 1973 International Scout II. And a vintage Honda Trail90 bike to go with it.

The Build

The Scout is the kind of rig you don’t really build, you just get right. This one was a two-owner Pacific Northwest survivor with original paint and real character. 406 Garage out of Oregon ran the restoration top to bottom:

  • 345 V8 with the 4-speed manual
  • Full engine reseal and mechanical refresh
  • New brakes, steering, suspension, tires, and exhaust
  • CPT 2.5” lift on Bilstein shocks
  • Kenda 33x10.50R15 tires
  • Front Runner roof rack
  • Warn 8274 winch loaded up with new Yankum winch line and a Groove Fairlead
  • Bellfab jerry can mount
  • Midland two-way radio bundle
  • Reupholstered interior with the original exterior patina polished up

Massive thanks to 406 Garage for handling the build. They put a vintage rig back into fighting shape without losing what made it cool in the first place.

The Phone Call

Here’s the moment Dave finally started to believe us. Watch:

Dave brought his wife and son out to Yankum HQ in Burley for the reveal. We gave them the tour, sat down for lunch with Alan and Jade, then loaded the Scout and the Trail90 onto a trailer for the drive back to Colorado. Dave already had a garage full of projects. An American classic like this one fit right in.
